Reversing a tyranny of cascading shoreline‐protection decisions driving coastal habitat loss

چکیده

Shoreline hardening is a major driver of biodiversity and habitat loss in coastal ecosystems yet remains common approach to management globally. Using surveys waterfront residents North Carolina, USA, we sought identify factors influencing individual shore-protection decisions ultimately impacting ecosystems, particularly wetlands. We found that neighboring shore condition was the best predictor respondent condition. Respondents with hardened shorelines were more likely have neighbors shorelines, report influenced their choices than respondents natural shorelines. Further, who expressed climate-change skepticism preference for shoreline opposed shoreline-hardening restrictions. Despite preferring hardening, ranked wetlands as highly valuable storm protection other ecosystem services, suggesting disconnect between ecological knowledge individuals social norms decisions. However, our results also suggest efforts increase installation living potential conserve restore important habitats support along may otherwise be degraded by hardening. encouraging waterfront-property owners adopted recommend them an effective strategy initiate reinforce pro-conservation norms.

Cascading effects of the loss of apex predatory sharks from a coastal ocean.

Impacts of chronic overfishing are evident in population depletions worldwide, yet indirect ecosystem effects induced by predator removal from oceanic food webs remain unpredictable. As abundances of all 11 great sharks that consume other elasmobranchs (rays, skates, and small sharks) fell over the past 35 years, 12 of 14 of these prey species increased in coastal northwest Atlantic ecosystems....

Loss of ‘Blue Carbon’ from Coastal Salt Marshes Following Habitat Disturbance

Increased recognition of the global importance of salt marshes as 'blue carbon' (C) sinks has led to concern that salt marshes could release large amounts of stored C into the atmosphere (as CO2) if they continue undergoing disturbance, thereby accelerating climate change. Empirical evidence of C release following salt marsh habitat loss due to disturbance is rare, yet such information is essen...

Habitat complexity influences cascading effects of multiple predators.

Although multiple predator effects and trophic cascades have both been demonstrated in a wide variety of ecosystems, ecologists have yet to incorporate these studies into an experimental framework that also manipulates a common and likely important factor, spatial heterogeneity. We manipulated habitat complexity, the presence of two top predators (toadfish and blue crabs), and one intermediate ...
